Inflation 2: An Odd Example

Inflation proper is the general increase in prices across many to all products.

But, prices also get conflated with package sizes and product quality.

Smaller packages at the same price are a form of inflation (and a difficult one for the government to measure). Inflation is easier to measure if it's the same size package being sold at a higher price.

It's also easy to spot inflation if its the price goes up for the same quality of product. It's a lot harder to spot and measure though if it's a reduction in quality for the same price.

A good example of that came through my feed today:

It's a Kit Kat ... without wafers on the inside.

In more normal times, this is the sort of thing that would never get to consumers. Instead, a quality control inspector would have intercepted it before it left the manufacturing plant. (Yeah, that's a little hard to believe, but think about it: how often have you seen a defective Kit Kat? Someone's watching them).
